This is the DVD commentary for Underground, requested by [personal profile] ffutures. There's no point in denying it; I'd looked forward very much to Torchwood: Children of Earth and for about three and a half days it lived up to its promise. Then it abruptly fell off a cliff. It wasn't, for me, the death of Ianto (though that was a stupid death if ever I saw one) but by the smug nihilism of RTD's vision at that stage. The mawkish Gwen straight-to-camera piece about how Earth didn't deserve the Doctor, Frobisher's murder/suicide, and the absence of any form of loyal opposition was just so typical of RTD's approach, including the female politician who unblushingly proposes class-based genocide and is rewarded with the keys to Number 10. Suffice it to say, any fic which came out of that experience would be fix-it fic of some sort or other. But even for fix-it fic you've got to have some gleam of hope to cling onto. The only gleam of hope in COE seemed to me to come from Lois Habiba, who had done the best she could to retain her integrity in difficult circumstances, and would surely have a price on her head after that. She needed a place to hide and she needed a team she could be part of and who would back her. And that led me to remember another female character who had also got everywhere by being a temp, who had also had an unsatisfactory ending and who also needed both those things. And by the time one's got two temps, both of them highly skilled, one starts thinking of a typing bureau...

This is interesting, because technically I have no songs "to drive to" because I don't drive. Haven't had a license in 30 years. I do, however, have a Road Trip playlist on Spotify, which I acquired for my trip to Escapade 2016 when a friend drove me. So I put together a list of several hours' worth of reasonably high-energy high-volume no-deep-thoughts songs. I'm not going to list them all, though.

Highway to Hell | Louie Louie | Blitzkrieg Bop | All Revved Up with No Place to Go | Down Under | Rebel Rebel | Trigger Happy | Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) | Footloose | Sister Christian

The Parisian Tropics

Emile Zola, in his classic novel Le Ventre de Paris, references quite heavily the smell of Parisian fish markets in the summer. Whilst I have managed to avoid such odours, as he describes in glorious detail, the alternating heat, humidity, and thunderstorms has turned the visit this city into a rather unexpected experience. Nevertheless, we were blessed on Sunday with a meeting with Gianna V., a local whom I've known online for several years with a mutual interest in Glorantha. Gianna took us for a walk along Le Petite Ceinture a former railline reclaimed public nature walk. The walk ended with a visit to a book market where I found myself in possession of several hefty art history tomes.

After that we visited Montparnasse Cemetery, final resting place of many famour people. We visited a good number of sites, but in particular I felt special respect for the sites of Simon de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, Alfred Dreyfus, Pierre Joseph Proudhon, and Jean Seaberg. Each of these are individuals who have had a major effect on my own intellectual and aesthetic development; I could write extensively on each. For now, just these words of recognition will have to do.

The work-week began with a visit with Loic N, at the L'Institut du Calcul et de la Simulation on their HPC operating environment and the impressive cross-disciplinary work that they do. The university was next door to the medieval Musée de Cluny so managed to get a good dose of that end of the historic spectrum as well. The following two days have been at the Conference Teratec at Ecole Polytechnique Paliasseau, some distance from the inner city. A good-sized (1300 attendees) the conference show-cased the major projects undertaken in France's HPC environment in their quasi-syndicalist approach (business, academia, and government working on mutual projects). With dusk not occuring until around 10pm or later, much of the evening has been spent on semi-random public transport trips, eating at simple restaurants, and just walking; an especially pleasant discovery was a large park and gardens, Parc Montsouris. It's good to know that the Parisians have dedicated a park to mountain mice.

Gacked, this time round from [personal profile] moetushie and [personal profile] el_staplador.

Pick any story I've written, or, in the case of my longer, chaptered works, any chapter from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

My fic can be found here or here

Ooh, this is a fun one. My happy-dance memories cross several genres; the hardest part here is not repeating several songs from the "loud" set. There's a whole bunch of pop/rocks songs that get my feet tapping, and a handful of country songs, and a bunch of Irish ceilidh tunes (most of which I don't have names for), because I taught intermediate ceilidh dancing at the Starry Plough for a few years.

Intermediate is the easy level for teachers. Didn't have to teach the basics; didn't have to provide challenges for the experts. Intermediate works on refinement, expanding figure knowledge, and learning new dances.

Hal an Tow | Strip the Willow | Maid Behind the Bar | Sellinger's Round | The Congress of Vienna | Walking on Sunshine | Blue Suede Shoes | Twist & Shout | Baby Got Back | 65 Love Affair | Jose Cuervo | It's a Cowboy Lovin' Night | Relax | Blister in the Sun

But really, there's only one that always pulls me onto the floor )

A few days ago, Mum found out that she may have a close blood relative she didn’t know about, who was the product of an affair and put up for adoption after he was born. Details are sketchy but we worked out from his birth year that it’s possible his birth parents met at a party my mother’s parents threw.

I only know all this because she asked me to look into him and make sure it wasn’t a scam, and while it’s not a scam it’s also fucking uncanny how similar he and I are – not just physical appearance but hobbies and personality (as much as you can get personality from a facebook and a blog). He’s ten years older than me, but otherwise we’re pretty similar.

I emailed her like “I think this guy’s on the level, he’s just looking for a missing piece of his family” and had to stifle a strong urge to be like “Also I want to hang out with him, so be nice.”

I hope Mum likes him, I want to be his Facebook Friend.

Ok, we're back to lists. Not that I have a lot of options here; I don't listen to a bunch of loud music, and most of the songs I like aren't loud. But there are a few. I'm including songs that I don't think need to be loud all the way through, but have a section that I prefer to be at top volume so I can scream along with it and not year my own voice.

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go | Ballroom Blitz | Shut Up and Dance | It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) | Cum On Feel The Noize | We're Not Gonna Take It | I Wanna Be Sedated | Immigrant Song | Fat Bottomed Girls

...okay, maybe I do have a lot of options. Not as many as some of the others, but I'm not running out.

I have no idea what show or movie this was made from, but it's awesome )

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways to Give:

[personal profile] dreamwaffles linked to a fundraiser for Kaye, who has been researching Rat Lungworm, a disease that almost killed her son Graham, who is now disabled and uses a service dog for everyday life. Kaye was a crucial part of the University of Hawai'i's RLWD research team and also the team trying to get legislative support and grant funding, but she's fighting medical debt for Graham's treatment and ongoing needs. You can read more and help out here.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is still struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and is now dealing with an eye infection they need to get treatment for before their roommate and her toddler come back from vacation, so they don't infect the baby. They're raising $50-$60 in the short term for medical treatment; they also have a long-term fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

[tumblr.com profile] anna-guth is a student from Germany who was recently accepted to Redroofs School for the Performing Arts in England, but her parents can't afford the full GBP24K tuition. She is raising E6.5K for tuition and school fees; you can read more and reblog here, or give directly to the fundraiser here.

[tumblr.com profile] echosiriusrumme is a student trying to buy her own clarinet; at present she doesn't have her own instrument to practice with but has a pressing need to practice before auditions and recitals for a Performance track next fall at her university. She has a few options lined up for between $800 and $1.3K, but needs to raise the funds to cover the cost; she is offering to repay over time any funds contributed to the purchase. You can read more and reblog here (plus find a ko-fi link) or give to her paypal here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

[tumblr.com profile] sashayed: It’s Not That Bad to F— Up While Calling Your Senator About Something Important

To prove this point, she presents actual transcripts of messages she left on her senators' voicemail, with her reaction gifs.

Sample:

Hi, uh, Sen. [Name]. And staff. [Nervous laughter.] My name is [Rave Sashayed] and I’m a constituent from [place where I vote]. I just wanted to call to thank you for standing up against the AHCA in the Senate. I–it’s an incredibly cruel and stupid and – and vicious bill. You know? And I’m not, like – a person who used to call her Senators all the time! know? I’m, like, a normal person! [Nervous laughter] But this – it’s crazy to me that this bill could become legislation. It directly affects me, it directly affects the people I love. I mean, it kicks millions of people off of Medicare for a tax break for – I mean. You know this. You’re. Uh. A Senator. So. You’ve read the bill. Um.

I would like to remind people that I phoned my MP's office and actually stated (completely incorrectly and randomly) that I lived in a place which said MP does not represent, had this pointed out to me and had to correct myself. AND YET (like Sashayed) I LIVE.

Right now, it looks like the Senate is wavering. Republican Senators are saying they "just don't know" if they've got the votes to pass the AHCA.

If you can't do phoning, you can't do phoning (I am sometimes a person who can't do phoning). But if you can, now's the time. IT IS OKAY TO PHONE AND FUCK IT UP. As long as you can communicate that you are opposed to the AHCA, that's enough.

Also, have some MOTHERFUCKING ICONS (photos of the ADAPT protestors being arrested during their protest at Mitch McConnell's office).

Well, here we go, a topic where I don't have a whole playlist to throw around, and if I did, I wouldn't want to. I don't have a lot of people I want to forget in my life; the people I've known who were entirely negative, I want to remember whatever made me despise them so I can avoid it in the future.

So I'm stuck trying to figure out... are there songs I associate with the racist sexist step-uncle in Arkansas? With the kids who harassed me for being terrible at sports? With the teacher who gave me detention for reading in class? (I wasn't reading what everyone else was, because I'd finished it.) With the evil ex?

Wait, yes! There's a song that I like very much, that is so tangled with the evil ex (it was on one of his mix tapes) that I can't listen to it without unpleasant memories. :( Which is as close as I get to "a song that reminds you of someone you'd rather forget," I think.

This song is far too mellow for the associations I have with it. )

The 1995 P166 that has been until now door.murkworks.net has formally and abruptly retired itself. So I'm having to move the new box into place now. This is the DMZ box I was talking about earlier.

Henceforth, "Door" refers to "New Door," not the old machine that is broken. It is latest Debian.

Door has three network cards: eth0 going to cable modem, eth1 going to fixed IP LAN segment, eth2 going to DHCP LAN segment. Door is running both DNS and DHCP servers.

Door can see everything in the world, on all cards. Complete functionality.

DHCP side can see everything in the world, on all cards. Complete functionality.

Fixed IP machines can all see Door (including its DNS services), and each other, and talk to the DHCP side, but can talk to nothing living out on eth0.

tcpdump on Door shows Door handing off ICMP packets on eth0, so that direction seems okay.

I am not seeing ACKs coming back to Door on eth0 from google.com but I can't be sure they aren't doing something tricky and my filters are confused.

Door is 173.160.243.41 (on eth0), 173.160.243.45 (on eth1), 192.168.1.1 (on eth2). 173.160.243.46 is the modem. 173.160.243.40 is a network to eth1.

Anybody know wtf?

eta: The router - in addition to not showing door any ACKs for anything from .42 and .43 - is sending out a lot of ARP packets looking for 173.160.243.42 and 173.160.243.43, and I'm starting to think it won't talk to a gateway box in the fixed-IP range. I try to add .41 as a gateway address for .42 and .43 and it refuses, saying illegal LAN address. SUPER RAGIFICATION ENGAGED.

eta2: And the new problem is that the PS4 won't pick up the gateway information from the Linux-based DHCP server. It will pick up an address! It's also not getting the DNS server number either. Why? Fuck if I know, everything else does it right.
I may have to go back to Toronto on Tuesday for yet another job interview. This is bleeding me dry, as I'm currently only getting $400 a month in assistance, and each trip so far has cost me well over $100, just for transportation alone. That's not counting if I need something to eat or drink, or have some kind of other incidental expense come up, or whatever. (Believe me, last week when I was in Toronto, potables were an absolute necessity.)

I'm going to have a conversation with The Man (who, in my case, happens to be a woMan, but hey) about this, but I doubt there's anything they can do.

I am really wishing I get an offer soon. Like tomorrow. Two weeks ago. Six months ago.

I also need some new non-nylon grey tights to go with my skirt suit, but I have no idea where to get any. I found the ones I have (which have done yeo-thing's service) at Value Village last Hallowe'en (new), but they're developing a run.
